In the creation of her ceramic wares, artist Meg Graves employs symmetrical designs influenced by traditions in quilting and weaving. Designs are adhered to bowl shapes through the use of laborious hand-cut newsprint stencils. Many years of perfecting this technique have allowed the artist great latitude in her ability to create an entirely original design palette with each and every piece. The artist began developing her unique patterns while residing in Hawaii, heavily influenced by the traditional quilt patterns found there. Eventually her stylized quilt-patterned bowls and platters could be found in galleries throughout the state of Hawaii.
Over the course of the last three years she has developed new designs, drawing inspiration from patterning worldwide, especially Oriental/Persian textiles. In 2008, Meg relocated back to South Pasadena where we she maintains her studio at SOPA. Here in Southern California, she draws inspiration from local flora and fawna of the region. Given the hand-cut stenciling design technique, each piece remains entirely unique to any other, is made with expert craftsmanship, and may be enjoyed exclusively as an object of art. Still, the artist insists that the wares are entirely functional - and may be freely enjoyed in the context of everyday living.
